A Mirror of Insignificance

A wise woman once taught me that if I wanted to begin to see both the beauty and the pain of the world I first had to take a look at myself. I was told to look closely and memorize each line and each curve, because in the mirrors image I would find the first impression the world had of me. Then I must work to forget all that I saw because it never mattered anyway. What did matter is the way my eyes saw the importance of life itself. That day she left me with three points of wisdom in the way my eyes shifted from everything around me. The first is this, to begin to live one must know themselves and know what they want. The bigger question one must ask themselves is "who am I.. really." Regardless of faith or religion, one must stand in awe of reality itself and acknowledge that something created it. Whether it be God or some science thing im greatly unaware of, even if the earth formed itself we still were made in the same processes of every great person and thing that once existed. Know that you are connected to all that is, all that once was, and all that will ever be and know that because of that, all is possible for you. That is who you are. Now what do you want to come out of it? If you want to go anywhere, you must find some direction and actively push towards wherever it is you wish to go. Begin building the track that is your purpose, because even the best built train will go nowhere unless it's tracks are laid out before it's venture. You must become confident in the track you wish to build otherwise you'll find yourself either stuck or being pushed in the wrong direction by someone thinking they know your vision of the path better than you do. Secondly, life is a game of give or take and we must find the balance between the two. In the words of Martin Luther King, "Not everyone can be famous, but everyone can be great because greatness is determined by service". We think being known is the same as having value, and that mentality couldn't be farther from the truth. Someday all will forget how popular you were or how much "clout" you found surrounding you, but they will not forget the time you gave to help. Service and significance are the brothers of success. Lastly, always do the right thing. People will notice, the world will notice, even if it seems as though they don't. On someone's worst day they will think of the comfort they once found in you. When you look in the mirror, ignore all the lines and look closely into your eyes. It is there you will find your purpose and it is there you will find your soul.
